2017 - March

A fun day in Progresso, Mexico eating and dancing with friends always feels like home.

We attended a Boarder Patrol Tour.  It was very interesting to learn the current statistics and status of the processes in place.  The biggest thing the Boarder Patrol would like to see is more Immigration Judges and tougher penalties. This would make the biggest difference in the illegal immigration world per the border patrol personnel.

We made our 2nd visit to “No Name” Hamburgers taking some other first timers.  We all enjoyed the burgers and onion rings.

We coordinated a Wine & Cheese Happy Hour with our good friends Denise and Daniel for Fig Tree.  It was so much fun.  Great music provided by Denise and lots of great tasting wine and cheese. Bring a bottle for 2 people and sample 20-25 bottles of peoples favorites including white to red and everything in between.

Jim and Cheryl Hicks did a Hog Trough Dinner, it was a new experience for us dishing up the food from a simulated hog trough all cooked outside.

Our last event in Texas was Tourist Appreciation day in Progresso, Mexico.  Great food, drinks and lots of freebies with wonderful friends.  A good time was had by all. This is a yearly event on 21Mar not to be missed if you have never experienced the joys of the Mexican people .

We left Harlingen, TX and headed for the Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi area looking forward to lots of good seafood.

Our first stop was the Biloxi Visitor Center and Lighthouse.  The Visitor Center was a beautiful building.

We took the Biloxi City Trolley Tour which we would highly recommend.  There was much good history to learn about the city and the area. You are up close and personal with the remaining devastation of previous hurricanes.

Our first deep water Royal Red Shrimp.  We have heard about these for several years and always wanted to try them.  They are great, taste just like lobster, melt in your mouth.

The Katrina Carvings are from trees that were taken down by Katrina.  The artists have done a wonderful job giving the trees a new life.

We did the shrimping Boat Tour in Biloxi.  It was a nice 70 minute tour to learn about the shrimping industry on the Gulf Coast including dropping a net and 20min later reaping the bounty of sea life in the net for research purposes.

We ate lunch at Mary Mahoney’s Old French House Restaurant.  If you are ever in Biloxi it is a must for great food and history.  Best shrimp and grits!!  The fried green tomatoes with crab and crawfish were also very good..

Next stop was the Jefferson Davis Home & Presidential Library.  Jefferson Davis was the first and only President of the Confederate States during the Civil War.  Great job and interesting library with artifacts on his life and the war.

We took a drive along the eastern Gulf of Mississippi.  We stopped in Bay St. Louis to see the Train Depot and Mardi Gras Costume Museum.

Our last event in the Gulfport/Biloxi area was the Mississippi Bi-Centennial Celebration.  200 Years of state hood.  It was a nice celebration.
