2018 - April

Easter day we moved to South Foley, Alabama, just north of Gulf Shores.

We spent our first day at the beach.  Great weather day for the beach.

We took Denise and Daniel to the Foley Model Railroad Museum, always and amazing place to visit.  Next stop was the Medical Museum in Foley.

We had dinner at the Undertow Bar and Grille, our favorite place in the Gulf Shores area.  All you can eat Royal Red Shrimp and Crawfish for $11/person.  What a deal.  Royal Reds taste just like lobster.

We moved to the Savannah/Hilton Head Island area staying in Hardeeville, SC.

We celebrated Jerry’s 62nd birthday at the Olympic Café on the riverfront of the Savannah River.  Good Greek food, it had been awhile so it tasted very good.

We went back down to the riverfront the next day and spent some time wandering through the shops and enjoying a Guinness at Kevin Barry’s Irish Pub, best Guinness Jerry has found in the U.S.

The next day we took the Trolley Tour with on/off stops of Savannah’s Historic District.  It is a great city to walk around with so much history to see.

Our next stop was the historic sites on Hilton Head Island which included Mitchelville Freedom Park, Fort Howell and the Green Park Oyster walls.

We did the Dinner Cruise of the Savannah River on the Georgia Queen.  Nice dinner and a band that we line danced to.  Great exercise after all that food.

Our day at the beach was at Tybee Island about 18 miles east of Savannah.  A beautiful beach.  We did the Tybee Island Light House and Museum tour.  Nice views from the top of the lighthouse,

Dinner was at The Crab Shack Restaurant with live gators.  Food was excellent for the price.

We visited the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island.  They have a wonderful indoor discovery center with 68 acres of nature to walk through.

A tasty lunch at the Skull Creek Boathouse.  This was a nice way to end our Savannah/Hilton Head journey with Denise and Daniel.

From there we moved on to Waynesville, NC near Ashville to spend 5 days with Fred and Nancy.

Our first full day was out to Chimney Rock.  Great views all the way around.  We made it all the way up to Exclamation Point.  1,600 steps in total is a very good workout for the legs and cardio.

Our second day was a full day at the Biltmore Estate on our 38th Wedding Anniversary.  We did the full experience.  The 2 hour audio tour, the Rooftop Tour, the Upstairs/Downstairs Tour, the Winery with wine tasting and then ending with our Anniversary dinner at the Bistro Restaurant on the Estate.  Another day with a lot of stairs made for a good workout.

On our third day we did a road trip after 2 strenuous days of stairs.  We drove down through Maggie Valley to Cherokee then up to the Great Smokey Mountain Visitor Center and Farm Museum.  After a visit there we drove the Blue Ridge Parkway back to Maggie Valley.

We stopped at the Elevated Mountain Distillery for a whiskey making education and of course some sampling.

Our last sightseeing day was in downtown Asheville.  We spent quite a bit of time in the Mast General Store. They had a little bit of everything and some very unique items.  Jerry enjoyed a few “Ice Cubes”, his favorite old fashion candy.  We went through the Pinball Museum, a very interesting place with a few Pinball machines from the 1930’s to the 1950’s and some you can still play.  We enjoyed lunch at the street side Carmel’s restaurant.

Fred and Nancy headed home.  We stayed for a few more days waiting out the rain.  It rained for 2 days, was good rest time after the busy last 4 weeks.

We spent the rest of April and the first of May in Archbold, Ohio at Sauder Village waiting out the snow melt and warm up at home.

Sauder Village was a very nice surprise.  The Sauder Heritage Inn had a wonderful pool and hot tub that the campground guests are able to use.

Sauder Village is a historic village of the local area with a museum that explains the Sauder Furniture business history.  The village had wonderful interpreters in many of the historic buildings explaining the life and times.

There was also a wonderful quilt show in the Founder’s Hall.  We felt like we were walking through an art gallery, so much detail and artistry in each of the quilts.

It was a great way to end our 9 month journey.  Until next fall........
