2018 - March

We had our annual Wine & Cheese Happy Hour.  27 bottles of wine were sampled and consumed with lots of delicious cheese appetizers.  And yes, there was no wine left over.

Our first day at South Padre Island beach was great fun with friends.  Great weather, fun bocci ball and snacks.  We all got a little too much sun but it sure was fun.

We found our new favorite Italian restaurant in the Valley, Cortino’s in Weslaco thanks to Nancy and Mike.

We had very unexpected, sad news.  Our good Fig Tree friend, Mike Sterling passed away very suddenly.  He will be missed dearly.

The Piano Man did a show for us, his piano and singing skills were very entertaining.  His 2 daughters also did very cute performances.

We tried the Yucca flower, both fresh and deep fried.  It tastes like a cross between cabbage and radish.  Very good indeed.

Had a wonderful sunset cruise with dinner on the laguna side of South Padre Island with great friends from Fig Tree.  A very memorable evening.

St. Patrick’s Day dinner/dance was lots of fun at Fig Tree.

Our last day at South Padre Island during spring break.  Great beach day with wonderful friends.

Winter Texan Appreciation Day in Progresso gave us a very nice surprise with the Acrobatic Motorcycle team from Mexico City.

 A goodbye margarita with friends.

We moved from Harlingen, TX to Lafayette, LA spending a night at the Walmart in Wharton, TX.  Thank you Wally-World!!  We will be spending the next 3 weeks traveling with our good friends Denise and Daniel.

We spent our first day in Louisiana showing Denise and Daniel the Tabasco Factory on Avery Island, eating at Shucks in Abbeville and the Konriko Rice Company.

They have added some new areas to see on the Tabasco Factory Tour.  There is a new green house showing the peppers growing and the warehouse where the pepper mash is stored.  The pepper mash had a very strong pepper smell.

We again enjoyed the best oysters we have ever had at Shuck’s in Abbeville. They even threw in some free bread pudding with real rum butter sauce which was heaven.

We did the Konriko Rice Tour, the oldest operating rice mill in the U.S.  Very good pecan rice sample at the end of the tour.

Our next treat was a day trip to New Orleans, always entertaining and good food.  It is their 300th birthday!!  We enjoyed good music, a Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s and a muffuletta sandwich and shrimp and grits.  Fun day sightseeing and dancing.

We spent a little time walking around downtown Lafayette.  Very nice historical downtown area.

Good music for the evening at the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette.  An informal Cajun jam session with local musicians and home cooked jambalaya for a donation.  Very entertaining.  Our first encounter with a 10 ounce can of beer, had never seen these before.  They only sell 10 ounce here, no12 ounce cans.

Next door to the Blue Moon Saloon is the last Borden’s Ice Cream Parlor still in business.  What a history this place has.

Our Easter dinner one day early was Jerry’s Crawfish fix at the Crawfish Town USA Restaurant.  It is next door to the Cajun Palms RV Park we stayed at, very convenient.  Good seafood extravaganza.
